For more than two decades, I’ve had the privilege of sitting across from people during some of the hardest moments of their lives — struggling marriages, overwhelmed parents, anxious teens, and individuals trying to find peace again.
My path into counseling didn’t begin with a desire to “fix” people. It began with a calling to walk alongside them.
I earned my Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Our Lady of the Lake University and have been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Texas since 2005. Over the years, I’ve worked with couples, families, military members, teenagers, churches, and individuals across Texas in both private practice and faith-based settings. Today, I provide counseling statewide through my practice, RickCanHelpU, helping people rebuild connection, communication, and hope. But credentials only tell part of the story
Long before online counseling became common, I was working face-to-face with families trying to survive the teenage years, marriages under stress, and parents wondering where communication broke down. Those real conversations eventually led me to write How to Get Your Teen to Listen, a guide born directly from years inside the counseling room helping families rediscover meaningful communication.
What I learned then — and still believe today — is simple:
People don’t need perfect lives. They need understanding, direction, and someone who truly listens.
My approach isn’t clinical or distant. Clients often tell me sessions feel more like an honest conversation with someone who understands both psychology and real family life.
My Christian faith deeply shapes how I view counseling and relationships. I believe healing happens when truth, grace, responsibility, and forgiveness come together.
I’ve spent many years serving within church ministry, helping teenagers, parents, and families grow spiritually and emotionally — not just survive life, but live it with purpose and connection.
I’m also a husband and father. My wife and I have walked through the same seasons many families face — raising a child, navigating marriage through busy careers, and watching our daughter grow into adulthood. Those experiences continually remind me that strong relationships aren’t built through perfection, but through commitment, humility, and communication
Whether you come to counseling as an individual, couple, or family, my goal is the same:
I believe change is possible — even when things feel stuck, distant, or broken.
You don’t have to figure it out alone.
Rick can help you. What I learned then — and still believe today — is simple:
People don’t need perfect lives. They need understanding, direction, and someone who truly listens.
